🎯 What Is the CAGED Guitar System?

The CAGED guitar system is a method that uses five basic open chord shapes—C, A, G, E, and D—to map out chords all over the fretboard.

Each of these shapes acts like a stencil you can move up the neck. The magic is in how they connect—each shape overlaps with the next, creating a complete framework of the fretboard.

When you understand CAGED, you stop memorizing. You start visualizing.

🧩 The Five Core Shapes of the CAGED Guitar System

  • C Shape: The open C chord moved up the neck
  • A Shape: The open A chord barre-style
  • G Shape: The most underrated shape—but a powerful one
  • E Shape: Classic barre chord rooted on the 6th string
  • D Shape: Sweet-sounding shape rooted on the 4th string

Example: C Major in All Five CAGED Positions

ShapePosition
COpen
A3rd Fret
G5th Fret
E8th Fret
D10th Fret

Every position plays the same chord—C major—but with a different flavor and voice.

🎸 This is how pros play the same song across the neck with ease.

💡 Visualize the Neck Like a Map

When Jack—one of my long-time students—first tried to understand the fretboard, it looked like a jigsaw puzzle. Pieces everywhere. Nothing clicked.

That changed the day he discovered the CAGED system and paired it with FretDeck™.

“I could finally see the connections,” he said. “Not just where the chords were—but why they worked.”

🧠 How to Practice the CAGED Guitar System

1. Anchor on Root Notes

Every CAGED shape is built around a root note. Start by finding where the root of the chord lives in each shape.

Exercise:
Play a C major chord in all five shapes. Say the root note out loud as you move through each position.

2. Connect the Shapes Fluidly

Don’t treat the shapes like isolated boxes. Move between them without pausing.

Drill:
Start in the C shape → transition to the A shape at the 3rd fret → then to G at the 5th → and so on.

This is where muscle memory meets fretboard logic.

3. Build Inversions Inside Each Shape

Let’s spice things up.

Chord inversions allow you to rearrange the note order—giving you new voicings, color, and flexibility.

C Major:

  • Root position: C–E–G
  • 1st Inversion: E–G–C
  • 2nd Inversion: G–C–E

Use each CAGED shape to create three versions of every chord you know.

🎯 FretDeck makes this visual—so you stop relying on diagrams and start creating from instinct.

🔁 Use the CAGED Guitar System for Progressions

Let’s play this common progression:

C – G – Am – F

Using CAGED shapes up the neck:

  • C Major – C Shape (open)
  • G Major – E Shape (3rd fret)
  • A Minor – E Shape (5th fret)
  • F Major – D Shape (8th fret)

This gives your rhythm playing a moving, melodic quality—and teaches you to break free from the bottom five frets.

🎸 Go Beyond Major Chords

The CAGED guitar system isn’t limited to majors.

You can easily adapt each shape into:

  • Minor chords (lower the 3rd)
  • Dominant 7th chords (add b7)
  • Major 7ths, sus2, sus4, add9s, and more
